Nitrogen Overabundance: Globular Cluster and Halo Formation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Halo globular clusters pose four succinct issues that must be solved in any scenario of their formation: single-age, single metallicity stellar populations; a lower limit ([Fe/H]∼-2.3) to their average metallicity; comprising only 1% of the stellar halo mass, and being among the oldest stars in our Galaxy. New spectra are presented of Galactic stars and integrated spectra of Galactic globular clusters which extend to 3250Å. These spectra show show that the most metalpoor and among the best-studied Galactic globular clusters show strong NH3360 absorption, even though their spectral energy distributions in the near-UV are dominated by blue horizontal branch, AF-type stars. These strong NH features must be coming from the main sequence stars in these clusters. These new data are combined with existing data on the wide range of carbon and nitrogen abundance in very metal-poor ([Fe/H]< -3.5) halo giant and dwarf stars, together with recent models of zero-metal star formation, to make a strawman scenario for globular cluster formation that can reproduce three of the above four issues, and well as related two of the three issues pertaining to nitrogen overabundance. This strawman proposal makes observational and theoretical predictions that are testable, needing specific help from the modelers to understand all of the elemental constraints on globular cluster and halo formation. Ja n 19 98 Issues in the Formation of Globular Cluster Systems
1. Cluster Ages in the Milky Way Halo Globular clusters make up less than 1% of the visible halo stars. These, in turn, form only a few percent of all the mass present in the potential well of a large galaxy. However, these ancient star systems contain information about the history of halo formation out of all proportion to their fraction of the total mass. The literature on globular cluster sy...

The possibility that the Galactic spheroid was assembled from numerous, chemically-distinct protoGalactic fragments is investigated using a Monte-Carlo technique designed to simulate the chemical evolution of the Galaxy in hierarchical formation scenarios which involve no gas dissipation. By comparing the observed and simulated metallicity distributions of Galactic globular clusters and halo fi...
متن کاملThe Self - Enrichment of Galactic Halo Globular Clusters The mass - metallicity relation
We discuss the existence of a mass-metallicity relation among galactic halo globular clusters. The lack of any luminosity-metallicity correlation in globular cluster systems has been used as an argument against self-enrichment models of cluster formation. We show that such a relation is statistically present among the galactic Old Halo globulars. This observational correlation implies that the ...

In this second paper in our series, we continue to test primordial scenarios of globular cluster formation which predict that globular clusters formed in the early universe in the potential of dark matter minihalos. In this paper we use high-resolution N-body simulations to model tidal stripping experienced by primordial darkmatter dominated globular clusters in the static gravitational potenti...
متن کاملA New Method for Estimating Dark Matter Halo Masses using Globular Cluster Systems
All galaxies are thought to reside within large halos of dark matter, whose properties can only be determined from indirect observations. The formation and assembly of galaxies is determined from the interplay between these dark matter halos and the baryonic matter they host. Although statistical relations can be used to approximate how massive a galaxy’s halo is, very few individual galaxies h...
